Trip Report: Top Rope course at Camels Hump, 13 and 14 May 2017

Marc, Becca and Luke braved the clear but frigid weather at Camels Hump this weekend to learn all about top rope anchors and safe abseiling. Lots in the way of witty banter was thrown around, which makes for a fun learning environment! Not looking at anyone in particular, Marc.

Yes it was cold, but there is no such thing as “too cold”… only “not the right gear!” Until next time guys!

Trip Report: Easter Arapiles with MUMC

This Easter, the Melbourne University Mountaineering Club hired me to run three two-day Top-Rope and Seconding courses for their participants. Over 6 days, a total of 15 students hiked, climbed, clipped, knotted, placed, inspected and discussed their way through a series of skills necessary for safe, effective Top-Rope setups, and for working with a Lead Climber to safely and efficiently follow up some amazing trad climbs.

I enjoyed teaching this course (as I always do), but by the end of the 6th day I was mega exhausted! In saying that, a good group of enthusiastic students makes for a great experience for everyone, and we certainly had some fantastic people along!

Thank you guys for the opportunity to show you some essential skills out on the rock! See you next time!

Trip Report: Sport Climbing Course at Camels Hump (repeat)

This one-day course was organised through Gravity Worx Climbing Gym in Coburg. Minerva and Justin already had “lead-passes” from indoor gyms in Melbourne, and wanted to learn to transition their skills into the outdoors. A perfect sunny day (despite a cold weather report) at “Back-wall”.

Trip Report: Arapiles over New Year’s!

So… after far too many years I finally got to take my brother Lincoln out climbing at Arapiles over New Years. Turns out he’s got some natural talent… he managed to pull off an ascent of “Pilot Error” (20) on his 4th day climbing…ever! Other climbs in the trip included Muldoon, Agamemnon, Missing Link, The Bard, Eskimo Nell, Spiral Staircase and Camelot (at midnight on NY’s!). The abseil pictured is during the descent from Ali’s. Whew, what a busy 3 days! Not bad for someone who claimed to be afraid of heights on the first day.

Trip Report: Camels Hump 18 April 2016 (morning)

Russell and Simon joined me for a wonderful clear morning at Camels Hump near Mt Macedon, Victoria. We went up to the “Omega Block” area and had a go at a good few climbs, where they showed their expertise in hanging off the rock while taking selfies with an iPhone. Well done guys, it was a fun morning and I hope to have you out again!
